Alan, I will remember you for
Your humor that kept me laughing,
Your compassion that soothed my spirit,
Your optimism that gave me hope,
Your courage that knew no bounds,

You are my inspiration and my role model,
I will carry on our advocacy, yours and mine,
For everyone who has mental illness.

I love you and I will miss you
And I will always be comforted by the
Love that you showered on me.

Eulogy for Alan: 1955 - 2006

I’ve known Alan his whole life. Our stories are intertwined and inseparable. He is a part of me. I will always carry him with me.

Alan the child was sweet and trusting. Alan the student was one of the most brilliant, a mathematician and scientist. Alan, mentally ill and disadvantaged in every way, never gave up. Alan the adult was friend, counselor, comforter, and inspiration to a whole community of people. Alan in recent years was a philosopher who considered life in the deepest way. His theory of recovery was his expression of what it means to be a human being.

Much of Alan’s life was defined by his illness. His accomplishments are remarkable in view of what he was up against. He deserved much more. The world was not ready for Alan.

The meaning of a life is perhaps measured in the impact on other lives. Alan’s life was spent reaching out to those most in need. He made a difference.

I require the freedom and self-determination
To proceed under my own power,
To succeed or fail through my own efforts,
To have my dreams and visions
Meet the risk and uncertainty of daily life.
This is RECOVERY.

I was writing a new friend that its by asking questions we show an interest in each other. So please, don't you have a curiosity about me? Isn;t there some question you can ask me to bring us closer together? I'd love you to ask me a question or two! Please? Please probe me, prode me on to more conversation and please, don;t stop asking. So I ask, do you pray, what do you pray about? Do you know the ones who have passed away are still with us, our angels? Do you believe this as me? Does it bring you some comfort? Just think of all who came before us who watch us now? Are we not truely blessed with them? I love you my dear, please understand me. It is just so clear to me we are not meant to mourn excessively. We are meant to rejoice the miricle of reserection, to believe it as we believe in the Lord, this is my message here. Fear death not.  That is my message. For if we believe this simple thing we are promised life eternal when our time comes. But if this seems too much for you to handle, I am sorry. To many this does not come easy. But understand and your mind finds peace, so just know my message is peace be with you always. Worry not. Let the Lord worry, you then will know peace. I am at peace now, thank you.

Al
